I fucking love Punk Rock.
Thank you, sarahpalin-mamabear.
What is it about rock music that turns absolute mortals into living deities? I recently went to see the indie rock/Americana group Delta Spirit in Brooklyn and came across this quandary.
Over the course of an hour, I was transformed from a common spectator/lover of rock music, to an urchin groveling at the feet of a man—no taller than myself—with a ripped shirt, scruffy beard, and greasy hair. Matthew Vasquez, the charismatic lead singer of the group, jumped off of the stage and into the crowd during the last song(which was subsequently the first song that the band ever wrote): Motivation. Moments before this, my friends and I had moved from the darkened shoulders of the venue to the epicenter of the crowd during the wait for the encore. This was my idea, I felt like being a part of the action and the crowd at this particular show was just so great.
The second that Matthew jumped into the crowd—full of dirty scraggly ruffians like myself—the entire crowd stopped jumping and pushing and screaming. He walked right up to the general area where I was standing and started to dance and sing with the crowd. This normal human being, no different than you or I, aside from the fact that he happens to be the lead singer of a mildly successful music group, was able to captivate a crowd of hundreds just by walking among them, myself included.
Right before he got into the song I snapped the photograph that I will post above this blurb. During the song I had my arm around him screaming into the mic and dancing and jumping with all of these other people, and soaking up every moment that this “indie-rock god” was in my presence, or vice versa (perhaps it was I that was in his presence).
I spent a little while on the subway/path train back home thinking about how the hell that happens to people. Can any human being become a demigod? It’s a pretty remarkable transformation. Especially when you think about how tiny a band Delta Spirit is in the grand scheme of rock music. Even though the band isn’t widely or well known, Matthew Vasquez still attains a serious amount of fame and notoriety. Being slightly famous must be pretty epic.
